Are Tinted Windows Legal?

Window tinting is an incredibly useful tool in many different ways for all vehicle owners. Especially in the summer months, when the sun beats down for hours on end, having tinted windows can allow you to stay cool and keep you safe from the sun.

Tinted windows are a great way to keep the interior of your vehicle cool as well as to preserve your car’s interiors. After all, it’s common knowledge that extended sun exposure can be incredibly damaging to the interior furnishings of your car, fading the colors and maybe even warping the surfaces from the warmth. Driving can be safer and easier when your windows are tinted, because these tints can allow lower levels of sunlight without blocking your vision in the way that sunglasses do.

The ability of tinted car windows to block the sun and make your driving safer and more comfortable makes it an invaluable resource for all vehicle owners. But are tinted windows legal?

The short answer to this question is yes, they are! It is legal in all 50 states to have some level of window tinting on at least the rear windows of your vehicle. However, the amount of tinting and corresponding level of light that should be allowed in varies by the state in which you’re getting your windows tinted. Tinted window laws are variable, and you must make sure to check with local and state laws before you get your windows tinted in order to avoid any trouble.

For example, in the state of Florida, only a certain amount of window tinting is allowed, with different minimum light allowances for each different set of windows.

On regular sedans, the window tint allowance in Florida must allow 28% of light in on the front side windows and 15% of light in the back side & rear windows. On SUVs and vans, however, the laws for tinted windows in Florida are different. The front side windows are the same in that they must allow 28% of light in, but the back side and rear windows can let in as little as 6% of light.

There are many other regulations on window tinting that may be required of you as a vehicle operator, such as regulations prohibiting certain colors of tint. However, the most important rule to follow is your state’s rule as to the strength of a tint that is permitted.
